Nipissing welcoming new students

Future Nipissing University students are getting their first taste of what their university career will be like as the university hosts the annual New Student Orientation (NSO) over the next two weeks, and Brianna Allen, for one can’t wait.

Allen, who will begin her studies at Nipissing for a degree in History this September, is travelling from Newmarket, Ontario, for NSO on July 13.

“I’m really excited to be coming to Nipissing,” said Allen. “I was here in the fall when I was researching universities and I really liked Nipissing’s campus, its location and the fact that it is a reasonably small school where I can get more quality one-on-one time with my professors. Nipissing impressed me when I came to visit unannounced in the winter and found that the school was just as friendly and clean as when I was there during the scheduled tours.  That tells me that the school is genuine and that the students are happy and there to learn.”

Nipissing expects to welcome more than 1,400 people to North Bay for NSO, including roughly 500 high school graduates and their families and friends.

NSO provides first-year students the chance to discover essential information about Nipissing.  Students will have the opportunity to meet with their future professors and receive an overview of the academic expectations and requirements unique to Nipissing University.  They will be able to discuss their particular program with academic advisors to ensure that their course selections are accurate and complete. Each NSO participant will also be provided time to talk to current students about the transition to university to help prepare for classes in September.  As well, students and their families receive a tour of the campus and learn about the support services, resources, educational and extra-curricular opportunities available to them as Nipissing students.

“Now that I know that I’ll be attending Nipissing in September and that I’ll be studying History with an eye to entering the Schulich School of Education, NSO will be valuable because I can meet with the people that I need to and can get the exact information I need.  Plus, I can start to get to know my professors and classmates,” said Allen.

Each NSO day also includes student and parent forums in which current students and university administrators answer questions about Nipissing University, North Bay and first year experiences and expectations.

NSO days are organized around the academic programs available at Nipissing.  This allows incoming students to meet their fellow classmates early and make a connection with some of the people they will be sitting beside during their lectures this September.

NSO takes place on July 5, 7, 9, 13, and 15 from 8:15 a.m. – 4 p.m.
