Biology Day shows what Nipissing offers
Future biologists got the chance to don a lab coat and see the ins and outs of dissection, germs and other fun stuff last week, as Nipissing University welcomed high school students to Biology Day.
Aimed at local grade 11 students, Biology Day helps to inform students and their teachers about what Nipissing’s Biology and Chemistry programs have to offer. Nipissing professors and students provided the high school students with hands-on opportunities to learn about a day-in-the-life of a biology or chemistry student at university. Roughly 85 students from four area high schools (Almaguin, Widdifield, West Ferris and Chippewa) participated in the full-day event.
Throughout the day, students attended sessions lead by lab instructors and technologists from Nipissing’s biology department. Session topics included anatomy, chemistry, ecology, microbiology and environmental science. Current Nipissing students also provided their perspective on Nipissing’s biology program and why it has proven to be the right choice for them.
“We want to make sure that local students and their teachers are aware of what exists at Nipissing,” said Joseph Boivin, an instructor in the Biology department and one of the event organizers. “We offer small classes and the chance to participate in research, which is a real benefit to our students. The groups who visited, had a lot of fun and learned a lot about what this university can provide.”
