The Nipissing Lakers men’s varsity volleyball team split a pair of weekend games in Hamilton.
The Redeemer Royals scored a come from behind 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 22-25, 10-15) victory on Friday; however, the Lakers were able to bounce back to defeat the Mohawk Mountaineers 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday.
Friday, the Lakers were looking to avenge their only loss of the season to the Redeemer Royals and things were looking good as the Lakers found themselves leading 17-11 in the fourth set. To this point the Lakers had managed to keep the large crowd relatively silent; however, a missed serve and several unforced hitting errors gave life to the home crowd and the team. The Royals continued to play inspired defence and were able to climb back into the match. The Lakers were their own worst enemy, creating numerous unforced errors down the stretch. The Royals finished the fourth set on a 14-5 run, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, the Lakers got off to another great start and were leading 8-4 at the turn. Once again, however, the Lakers could not maintain their execution and the Royals finished on an 11-2 run completing the comeback.
Andre Leblanc scored a match high 18 points while Tom Podstawka added 17.
Sunday, the Lakers would be tested again. After dropping the first set, the team responded by putting forth a gritty effort against a formidable opponent in the Mohawk Mountaineers. Podstawka and Scott Coulthard led the offence with 18 and 11 points respectively.
The Lakers now prepare for the Sheridan Bruins (6-4) Saturday and Fanshawe Falcons (4-6) Sunday. Game times are scheduled for 2 p.m.
