Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball coach Marc LaRochelle is pleased to announce the commitment of Lindsay Vanderweide to attend Nipissing University in 2013.Vanderweide, a 5’11” left-handed right-side player, played most of her club volleyball for the Burlington Blaze. As a member of the Blaze, Vanderweide and her teammates had an impressive provincial championship run in 2011, finishing fourth in the province.
Vanderweide returned as an overage player in 2013 with the Mountain Volleyball Club team and has so far earned one gold (Championship West), as well as a fifth and seventh place finish in the ultra competitive 18U division.
“Lindsay will be an offensive force at the OUA level and she will add an edge to the Lakers program with her competitive attitude,” said her former Blaze coach Matt Schnarr. “Lindsay will be a great addition to the program at Nipissing. I, and the Blaze Club, wish her all the best at the next level.”
Vanderweide played her high school volleyball at Waterdown District High School. The Warriors are four time AAA OFSAA participants claiming silver medals in 2012 and 2013. Vanderweide was named the MVP for both her club and high school teams in 2012.
“I chose Nipissing University because of the small town atmosphere and the student teacher ratio,” said Vanderweide. “I am very excited to join a team that is just entering the OUA and ready for the challenge ahead of me.”
“I am very excited to have Lindsay join our program,” said LaRochelle. “She has tremendous potential at the OUA level. She is athletic, jumps well, and has a variety of shots. Most importantly, she has a great work ethic and a team-first mentality. Lindsay is not afraid of challenges, and that is exactly the type of student-athlete we are looking for.”
In the 2013-14 OUA season, the Lakers will play in the East division with Ottawa, Queen’s RMC, York, Ryerson, and Toronto playing a home-and-away series within the division and a one game cross-over with the West division. The regular season will have the Lakers playing a total of 19 games with the schedule expected to be finalized in May.
