Exciting news for the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team

Volleyball recruits July 16

The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team is expecting big things next year, and they got some good news recently about two of their newest recruits.

Both Steve Wood and Nathan Charron have earned spots on Team Ontario; Wood with the indoor team and Charron with the beach team.
Lakers head coach Eric Yung said seeing two players who are going to be part of the Lakers volleyball program for years to come succeed like this is great.

“This is great news for these young men. Representing your province or country at any level is an honour and these guys deserve it,” Yung said. “As a program, we’re excited for them and excited about next season when they join the Lakers.”

Wood will be part of the team that travels to Gatineau, Quebec on July 15 to compete in the National Team Challenge Cup. The team was picked after a grueling training camp at the Nipissing University Athletic Centre (Robert J Surtees Centre), which is also the home of their training camp, as they prepare to head to Quebec.

The Challenge Cup runs from July 15 to 20.

Charron will make his second appearance as a member of Team Ontario’s beach team, having debuted last year. While it’s important to play against top competition, Yung also noted that these players will have some of the best coaches in not only Ontario, but also in Canada, which is going to help further their development.

“I am sure their experience with Team Ontario will help them transition into the CIS. Not only are they training with the best at their age, they also have access to some of the best coaches the province has to offer both on the court on the beach,” he said. “Both Nathan and Steve should be very proud of their accomplishments thus far and I have no doubt both players will strive to excel at the next level.”

Being able to rise to any occasion is a big part of sports. Whether it’s during practice or during a game, it all helps build towards something bigger and better and taking part in a national event like Wood and Charron will be doing is going to go a long way in helping them develop as players and become impact players at the next level.

And that’s something Wood, Charron, Yung and the entire men’s’ volleyball program are looking forward to.

“Competing against the best in the Country will offer them a sense of what standards they want to set for themselves. Hopefully they will further understand what it takes to train and compete at the highest level,” Yung said.
