About
Mary is the Manager of Addictions and Developmental services at Community Counselling Centre of Nipissing (CCCN). Mary started her social work career in 1994, working in a residential substance abuse program, while she was a student. After studying structural social work at Carleton University she developed a passion for social justice and began working in a community based counselling program for urban Indigenous women and children who had experienced sexual violence. She became the clinical supervisor of the program which served individuals, couples, families and groups of Indigenous ancestry before she moved back to residential services as the Executive Director of two different violence against women shelters. Mary has developed and implemented numerous programs and services for survivors of violence, women who work in the sex trade and women who abuse substances. In her role at CCCN, Mary has been instrumental in implementing the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine Clinic (RAAM) based on the Meta:phi model out of Women’s College Hospital in Toronto.

Research

Mary’s research for her MSW thesis asked if harm reduction programs were connecting the personal and political in the lives of women who inject drugs. This question resulted after a focused study in her BSW that explored the childcare options for women seeking residential treatment for substance abuse. Mary has taught social work theory, community development, policies that govern social work practice, placement preparation, substance abuse in Indigenous communities and contemporary issues in Indigenous communities at the college level. Mary has worked as a consultant on violence against women issues to The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa, Rapid Lake First Nation, and The Ottawa Police Services. She continues to have a passion for facilitating structural change and ending violence against women and children.
