One and one for Lakers hockey in weekend games

It was an up and down weekend for the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team who recorded a dominating win over RMC before a tough loss against Toronto.
On Friday night at home in front of some 2,000 fans, the Lakers donned camouflage jerseys for the third annual Support the Troops game against the RMC Paladins.

The Lakers were the dominant team, outshooting RMC 64-17 en route to an 8-3 victory.

Scoring for the Lakers was provided by Dorian Peca (with two), Jason Gray, Sam Hopewell, Brandon Biggers, Grant Toulmin, Brogan Bailey and Andrew Marcoux.

It was a different story for the Lakers on Sunday in Toronto against the third-place University of Toronto Blues.

The Lakers found themselves down 4-0 after the second period and were simply unable to mount the type of comeback needed to climb out of that hole.  The final score was 5-1.

Team leading scorer Connor O’Donnel popped the lone Lakers goal in the third period.

Despite the lopsided score, Lakers head coach Mike McParland felt his team played well and put in a solid effort, noting that the Blues were able to capitalize on each one of their chances.

The weekend results put the Lakers in sixth place in the OUA East, two points behind fifth-place Ottawa, and three points back of fourth-place McGill.

Up next for the Lakers is the Queen’s Gaels, who are sitting in seventh place, four points back of Nipissing.  It should make for a big game as the Lakers will be looking to add some space in the standings between them and the Gaels.
