Faculty upset in Pangea Cup
Last week was a brutal reminder that even the giants of the soccer world can falter. Earlier in the week European favorite FC Barcelona was eliminated from the Champions League and in an even greater shock to the world of soccer, Nipissing’s Geography faculty lost 14-13 to the Geography students in the annual Pangea Cup held on April 14.The game was not without controversy. In a desperate attempt to capture the coveted trophy, the manager of the student club, Jasmine, reverted to a variety of questionable tactics including delaying the event, changing the location of play, recruiting non-sanctioned varsity players and pushing a very physical game of play against the far superior soccer skilled faculty.
Thanks to the last minute change to the event, the faculty team was caught with a short bench. Fortunately, they were able to bring up three young recruits from their Under 45 youth academy team. The recruits, Jeff “the Wonder Boy” Dech, Logan “Shorty” Hoehn and Stephen “Register that!” Tedesco showed they deserved a place on the elite team. Although all three were initially intimidated by the unorthodox physical play and verbal taunting from the students, they helped the faculty take a 13-12 lead in the last few minutes of the game after trailing from a five goal first half deficit.
Unfortunately, in the last two minutes of play, the students were able to solve the defensive wall held by James “El Tigre” Abbott to secure their victory. The faculty team will now take the time to prepare their new talent in the hopes of recapturing the Cup in 2017.
It has been reported that the manager of the student team would not comment on her questionable tactics, resigned from her position as president just minutes before the game and is on the move out west, apparently for grad school.
