NU welcomes intern from prominent student affairs program
This summer, Nipissing will welcome graduate intern Jeehee Ha to campus for seven weeks to support the development and implementation of orientation and student experience programs.
Ha begins her internship on May 22, it runs to August 12.
This is the third consecutive year Nipissing’s Student Learning and Transitions department will be joined by a graduate intern representing the NODA Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education Internship Program at Nipissing University. Ha, a graduate student in the Master of Higher Education Administration program at the University of Kansas, follows past interns Matthew Dempsey, Colorado State University; and Jenni Farlow, Michigan State University.
“The partnership with NODA's internship program provides us the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of innovative and upcoming research while also giving our staff and students the opportunity to help American graduate students understand the international contexts of our profession and field,” said Sterling Webb-Crowe, manager of Student Learning and Transitions. “It's exciting for us as we are often the only, or one of the very few, Canadian institutions who are involved in this program annually.
“Our goal is to introduce Jeehee to an emerging student development experience at a northern Ontario institution, where learning, engagement, and value for inclusion are the focus of our programs, activities and services. We are excited to continue to work with the NODA Internship program. It is one of the most prestigious student affairs internship programs around and it allows us to give back to our field while keeping learning and development as our primary focus. It's an incredibly rewarding experience to be able to support these students as they develop and reach measurable goals that contribute to their scholarly work and their future as scholar-practitioners in student affairs.”
Ha currently works as a graduate assistant for the Hawk Link Program, a retention-based academic program for first year students at the University of Kansas (KU). Before coming to KU, she completed her MBA at Marshall University and her Bachelors of Arts in Sociology at Miami University (Ohio). Ha became interested in Higher Education Administration from her involvement in several student organizations at Miami University and her experiences in different areas of student affairs. She has worked as a graduate assistant in the Marshall University Higher Education for Learning Problems Center, which provides tutoring and academic support services for students with learning disabilities. Additionally, she interned with the Marshall University Upward Bound program, that services high school students from low-income families and students from families in which neither parent has a bachelor’s degree.
The NODA Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education began in 1976, and its mission is to provide education, leadership, and professional development opportunities related to college and university student orientation, transition, and retention. The NODA Internship Program matches orientation, transition, and retention professionals and host postsecondary institutions with students wanting to expand their connections and their orientation experience.
