Psych Speaker Series welcomes Dr. Sujeenthar Tharmalingam
Nipissing University’s Psychology Speaker Series welcomes Dr. Sujeenthar Tharmalingam, of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Laurentian University, to campus for a lecture titled Modern cutting-edge molecular tools for the treatment of developmental brain disorders, on Friday, March 3, at noon in room F210.
Here is an abstract on his talk:
Neurodevelopmental brain disorders represent an enormous disease burden in terms of human suffering and economic cost. Current pharmacological approaches for the treatment of developmental brain disorders are ineffective in reversing the neuronal impairments and biochemical deficiencies encountered by the affected brain regions. However, the advent of newer techniques in cell and molecular biology combined with advances in physical and computational capabilities provide novel therapeutic avenues for the treatment of developmental brain disorders. This seminar will highlight novel cutting-edge molecular tools currently under development for the treatment of a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorders, developmental brain cancers and maternal-stress induced fetal brain damage. Successful therapeutic examples of viral vector mediated gene therapy, immune stimulation using low doses of ionizing radiation, and antioxidative supplementation will be discussed.
