Peturson opens solo exhibition in Calgary

On September 14, Laura Peturson, of the Fine and Performing Arts Department opened a solo exhibition entitled Wasteland/Wanderland at the Alberta Printmakers Gallery in Calgary.

Wasteland/Wanderland is an immersive installation comprised of woodcut and linocut prints adhered to the gallery walls that depict children as the explorers of a beautiful, yet dystopian setting. Navigating a tangled landscape filled with genetically modified and invasive species, the figures are presented as both tenacious and vulnerable. Drawing upon archetypes from children’s literature, this narrative installation captures an experience of childhood as it relates to place: Place as geography, place within a family structure, and the interiority that forms one’s sense of identity.

Peturson’s exhibition in Calgary follows a very active summer, where she was awarded Best of 2D work (painting, drawing and printmaking) at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, and exhibited at both the International Print Center and Flowers Gallery in New York, and the Centre for Contemporary Printmaking in Connecticut. Later this month, Peturson’s work will be included in an exhibition called Tradition Transformed: The Carmichael Canadian Landscape Exhibition at the Museum of Art and History in Orillia. Wasteland/Wanderland runs until October 27.
