Do I qualify for Exchange?

To be eligible to participate in our exchange/study abroad program a student must meet the following criteria:

• Must be a Nipissing University student
• Have completed a minimum of 30 credits successfully with Nipissing University
• Be in good standing with the university, both academically and financially
• Have a minimum overall GPA of 70%
• Maintain a minimum 70% overall average and remain in good standing prior to departure

Can I go exchange at any point throughout my degree?

As a requirement to go on exchange, you must have completed a minimum of 30 NU credits. Due to this requirement, students cannot go on exchange until their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year. We recommend for students to aim to study abroad during their 3rd year, but some students can study during their 2nd or 4th year, although this may result in changes to your academic plan. Students considering to go on exchange during their 4th year will be considered on a case-by-case basis. It is important that you discuss your plan with your Academic Advisor.

When should I start preparing if I want to participate in an exchange?

It is best to begin preparation to go abroad during the first year of your program at Nipissing. The early you prepare the easier it will seem. Starting early gives you the opportunity to properly organize you courses and financials to prepare for your journey abroad.

How much will it cost?

Cost is dependent on where you choose to study. Certain countries have higher cost of living, while others can be fairly low. After browsing through some of the available options, you should research on the different locations that interest you. It is also suggest you complete the Student Budget. You can gain a lot of information. You can also get valuable information on the countries of interest at www.travel.gc.ca

After you have been accepted to study abroad it is important that you begin to prepare as soon as possible. Make sure you review the checklist on the MyInternational Database, where you completed your application, as this will provide you with a detailed list of tasks that must be completed or acknowledged prior to departure. You must complete these and check them off and/or have them signed off prior to departure to be eligible for your opportunity. Additionally, there are requirements you must complete while abroad and upon arrival.

How can I take my education abroad?

Taking your education abroad is an exciting opportunity. Visit the eligibility page to determine whether you qualify to apply to one of Nipissing’s exchange opportunities. It is best to start preparing to go abroad during the first year of your program at Nipissing. By starting early, you are able to organize your courses and ensure that, if selected for an exchange, you will be in an ideal academic standing. If after visiting eligibility page you are still interested in the opportunity, you can stop by the Student Development and Services office, in B210, and talk with the Manager of International Student Support & Community Liaison to begin the planning process. We strongly recommend that you book an appointment with an academic advisor prior to submitting an application to study abroad as they will provide you with the necessary academic information.

How can I "internationalize" my degree?

The International Initiatives department provides opportunities for Nipissing University students to take their degrees abroad through a variety of intercultural experiences. Some examples of opportunities that students have been offered are; study exchanges, language programs, internship/volunteer programs, and on-campus engagement opportunities.

If you are unable to participate in an international sojourn you can take advantage of one of our opportunities to internationalize your degree at home by joining the International Student Mentorship Program or the local WUSC Committee.
