Geography student earns ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship
Congratulations to geography student Riley Cormier, who is the recipient of the 2018 ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship for Nipissing University.
Cormier moved to North Bay from Niagara Falls in 2010 to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Physical Geography at Nipissing University. He is currently in his fourth year, and in addition to excelling with his academic studies, is currently working as a research assistant with the Geography department’s project with Agriculture Canada. He is also contributing to a study of mangrove loss in Australia with Dr. John Kovacs and a survey of colonial encroachment on Dokis First Nation Land using aerial photographs with Dr. Kirsten Greer.
Cormier has been the recipient of two undergraduate student research awards from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. His proposal for the ESRI Award is to use GIS to conduct a landslide risk analysis around the community of Terrace, British Columbia.
When not working on his studies and research, Cormier enjoys spending his time hiking, canoeing and exploring around North Bay.
The ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship comes with a $1,500 reward, a perpetual license of Esri's ArcGIS software, for education and research use ArcGIS Desktop Advanced, one year of complimentary maintenance (provides software updates, technical support and unlimited access to e-learning courses through the Esri Training site), an array of ESRI publications, and registration for one of Esri Canada's User Conferences in 2018.
