NU Reads closes the cover on another summer

NU Reads Summer Literacy Camp wrapped up another fantastic summer with an Art & Invention Gallery created by the Week 5 campers.

Inspired by books such as Not a Box by Antoinette Portis, What to Do with a Box by Jane Yolen, and The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires, campers brought their ideas to life. Using resources from clay and plasticine to boxes and other recycled materials, campers filled the room with innovation and inspired creations. Rich talk spread through the room as campers shared their ideas and designs.

This summer, NU Reads welcomed almost 100 different campers across five weeks of camp with many returning for multiple weeks. Throughout the summer, campers wrote scripts, performed reader’s theatres, staged puppet shows, made playdough, built villages, wrote stories and made books, went on scavenger hunts, sang, read, drew and painted together - and much more.

NU Reads appreciates all those on campus who helped to support the literacy learning of our campers. From word walks around the campus to an amazing race challenge that made stops at offices, we always found friendly faces ready to lend a hand. Some highlights included storytime with Laura Sinclair at The Harris Learning Library, a storytelling visit from Dr. Doug Gosse, a green screen tour with Josh Davidson from the Canadore College Digital Cinematography Program, and a 3D Printer demonstration by Connor Jones from NUExplorations.

All campers received a book from Books for Brook - a literacy initiative established in memory of Brook Doseger, a 2016 graduate of Nipissing University’s Education program. Anyone wishing to donate books to Books for Brook can drop off books at the Schulich School of Education office.
