Online art exhibition documents year in quarantine

Nipissing University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts has launched an online exhibition titled At a distance: Reflections on a year in quarantine. The exhibition showcases a selection of artwork produced by Fine Arts (FAVA) students during the pandemic that reflect on a year in quarantine.

Throughout this period of isolation and working at a distance, FAVA students persevered in producing ambitious, thought-provoking and visually compelling artwork. FAVA students have also found ways to translate the personal impacts of the pandemic into the visual.  They meaningfully and bravely explored experiences of isolation, solitude, psychological stress, and the social and political impacts of COVID-19.

At a distance features the artwork of 11 students who represent all four years of study and includes a range of approaches and disciplines including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and digital video.

“As a department, we feel this is an important moment to give our students voice and visibility, and to acknowledge their experiences over this last year. We see the challenges, stresses, and uncertainties that they have faced, and with this exhibition we acknowledge their resiliency, and we celebrate their achievements. We are incredibly proud of our students,” said Amanda Burk, chair, Department of Fine and Performing Arts.
