Nipissing’s faculty and staff are committed to decolonization and reconciliation and provide a supportive environment for Indigenous students enrolled at the University. Our campus is located in a region home to 7,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit residents, many of whom choose to study at Nipissing University. As a public university located on the traditional territory of Nipissing First Nation and on the lands within the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850, Nipissing University is bound to advance knowledge and be a good guest on this land.

Account, Email & Equipment

New employees will receive login credentials for Nipissing University's secure IT systems, including email accounts, on or before their first day of work. Our IT department will assist with setting up workstations and providing any necessary computer equipment. Remote employees can receive equipment and tech support through scheduled delivery or pickup.

Application Process

Job openings are posted on the Nipissing University website under the “Careers” section. Application instructions are located within the job application. Be sure to include your resume, cover letter, and any other required documents listed in the job posting and indicate whether you are a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or otherwise legally eligible to work in Canada.

Benefits

At Nipissing we offer an excellent Extended Health and Dental group benefit plan that is cost-shared with the employer. The plan also includes short and long-term disability and life insurance.

Employees have access to our Employee Assistance Program which is confidential and available to employees and their dependents 24 hours a day, seven days a week via telephone or virtually.

Dress Code

Nipissing University promotes a business casual dress code in most departments, allowing for comfort while maintaining a professional appearance. Depending on your role and department, specific dress guidelines may apply, such as formal attire for official ceremonies or casual wear for certain operational departments. Employees are encouraged to confirm any department-specific requirements with their supervisor. Employees are permitted to wear jeans on Fridays.

Housing/Residence

While Nipissing University does not provide employee housing, we offer support in finding local accommodations through partnerships with local realtors and community housing resources. Additionally, we are located in the vibrant and affordable City of North Bay, where various housing options are available, including apartments, townhomes, and single-family residences. 

If you’d like to inquire about temporary housing on campus, you may contact our Residence team at residence@nipissingu.ca. With a high demand for full-time accommodations on campus, however, it may not be possible to obtain temporary accommodation in Residence during the academic year. Nipissing also offers Off-Campus Living Resources.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Partnerships with Other Institutions

Nipissing University actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration by fostering research networks across departments and disciplines. Faculty members are encouraged to engage in cross-departmental projects and external partnerships, whether through joint grant applications, collaborative research initiatives, or co-authorship opportunities. Additionally, Nipissing has partnerships with other Canadian and international institutions, enabling faculty to collaborate with external researchers or participate in joint funding opportunities.

Library

Serving Nipissing University and Canadore College, the Harris Learning Library is your gateway to library services, online instructional tutorials and information resources including electronic and print books, articles and streaming videos. Information resources can be accessed through OMNI (nipissingu.ca/omni), an easy to use academic search tool that provides access to over 23 million items from 19 of Ontario’s university libraries. Friendly and knowledgeable staff members provide help in person, by email or phone to support your research and teaching needs.

Parking

Nipissing University offers on-campus parking for employees, students, and visitors. Parking passes are required and can be obtained from the Security office. Various parking options are available based on individual needs. For more details on parking locations, fees, and how to apply for a permit, please contact Security or visit the parking section on the university website.

Pension

Employees have the option to participate in a Defined Contribution Pension Plan, which provides employees with an important source of retirement income.

For Members enrolled in the OTPP, the Members and the Employer will pay contributions in accordance with the terms of the OTPP. The determination of benefits and contribution rates is solely within the jurisdiction of the OTPP.

Remote Work Policy

Nipissing University supports a hybrid and remote work model where applicable, per the Remote Work Policy. Employees are encouraged to discuss their remote work options with their direct supervisor to ensure it aligns with departmental needs and role responsibilities. Flexible work schedules may be available, and our Human Resources team can assist with any inquiries.

Security

The safety of our employees and students is a top priority at Nipissing University. The campus is patrolled 24/7 by our Security Services team, which is available to assist with any safety concerns, from emergency response to escort services for those working late. Employees are encouraged to familiarize themselves with emergency procedures and safety protocols. The university also offers the Nipissing Safe App, which provides important safety alerts and instant access to campus safety resources. For non-emergency inquiries or safety concerns, contact Security Services or refer to the university’s safety and security webpage.

Support for Research - Internal Funding, Grants & Sabbatical Opportunities

Nipissing University offers several forms of internal support for research activities, including:

  • Internal Research Grants: Available to faculty to support pilot projects, data collection, or seed funding to apply for larger external grants.
  • Sabbatical Opportunities: Sabbatical leave is offered to tenured faculty to support dedicated research periods and academic renewal. The frequency and length of sabbaticals vary depending on faculty rank and tenure status.
  • Travel Grants: Funds to support faculty presenting their research at national or international conferences.
