Nipissing University prefers that the elimination or reduction of respiratory hazards be done through substitution or the use of engineering controls. However, there may be instances where the use of appropriate respiratory protection is required for work which involves exposure to potentially hazardous environment, such as airborne contaminants (dust, fume, mists, gases, vapours, aerosols, airborne pathogens or oxygen-deficiency).
Nipissing University recognizes its responsibility to protect employees/ students/ volunteers and contractors from exposures to potentially hazardous environments by providing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), respirator fit testing and training on the use of respirators.
The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z94.4-02 (Selection, Use and Care of Respirators) requires a written respiratory protection program to be in place where protection is used to protect workers from inhaling hazardous atmospheres.
