Library Services

Borrowing

Resources

Library patrons can borrow physical resources (books, DVDs, posters, kits etc.) using their valid student/staff/faculty card.  Community members are issued a separate Library card.

Licensed electronic resources (E-Resources) can be accessed by any current student, staff or faculty member. If you are a Nipissing University student/staff/faculty member, use your WebAdvisor credentials. If you are Canadore College student/staff/faculty member, use your network login credentials.  Alumni and members of the North Bay community do not have access to licensed electronic resources, but have access to Open Access content.

Items may also be requested through Interlibrary Loan (RACER).

Borrowing

We loan books, videos, and other materials to current students, staff and faculty of Nipissing University and Canadore College. Alumni and community members within our catchment area may also borrow materials. You can borrow these items for the following time periods:

  • Books - 120 days
  • Kits, Posters and Puppets - 28 days
  • Media (DVDs, audiobooks, etc.) - 14 days

Curbside Pickup

Library patrons can always take advantage of curbside pickup service at the Harris Learning Library.  To do so, place a request in either Nipissing Search. Wait until you receive email notification that the item is on hold for you before coming on campus to pickup your item(s). On arrival at the library, contact the Circulation Desk (705-474-3450 x4222) and provide staff with your name, ID# and the title of the item(s) you are picking up. Staff will sign the items out to you (an automated email receipt will be sent) and meet you at the front doors of the library. Please have photo ID ready to show staff.

Unvaccinated / partially vaccinated library users must use this service to receive materials as entry to the library requires proof of vaccination.

Renewals

Library patrons may renew their materials online by selecting “My Library Account” from the Menu drop down in either Nipissing Search, by phone at 705-474-3450 x4222, or in person. Please note that you may not be able to renew an item if the book is overdue, someone has requested it, or you have outstanding fines.

Fines and Fees

If an item is 30 days past its due date, the patron will be charged a $125 Replacement Charge for the item in addition to a non-refundable $25 Administration Fee.

All accounts with more than $30 in fines will be blocked. Patrons with a blocked account will no longer be able to borrow items from the Library until their total fines are brought below the $30 limit.

Holds

If you would like to borrow an item that is currently signed out, you may place a request on the item from within Nipissing Search.

Paying Library Charges

Any Library charges can be paid at the Circulation Desk by cash or cheque (made payable to the Harris Learning Library) only. If you wish to make a payment by debit, please contact the Overdues Technician at 705-474-3450 x4570 for details.
