Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards: in-course

(Based only on academics)

In-course scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit to full-time undergraduate students who have completed at least one full year of study at Nipissing University. Generally, an application is not required. Students must be registered ​to receive a scholarship, which is generally paid out in January. Weighted grades are used to determine eligibility for a scholarship; please check this section to confirm eligibility requirements for specific programs.

Provided to students on the basis of financial need or some combination of extra-curric​​ular involvement, academics, demonstrated leadership ability, volunteerism or other similar criterion plus financial need. To ​​demonstrate financial need, students must self-identify by applying for any/all of the following: OSAP (or other government student loan program), the Web Bursary Program, or the Work Study program.

Separate applications are not generally required for most of our bursaries and awards; if you feel you will require some additional financial assistance during the fall and winter session simply complete the online Web Bursary ap​plication which can be found on Web Advisor the month of October (it is due November 1). As part of our commitment to the Student Access Guarantee, bursary assistance may be provided, if warranted, to ensure that tuition and book costs are met.

    Established to honour Alan (1925-1994), the first Dean of the Faculty of Education, and his wife Joyce (1925-2009), an ardent supporter of the local arts community. Two scholarships are presented to Indigenous students graduating from either the Bachelor of Education program, the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP), the Indigenous Classroom Assistant Diploma Program (ICADP), or the Teacher of Indigenous Language as a Second Language (TILSL). Recipients must intend to go on to teach in an Indigenous community, be in strong academic standing, and demonstrate financial need.

    Administered by the Canadian Federation of University Women and is funded by the Loukidelis family in memory of Mrs. Loukidelis, a charter member of CFUW North Bay. It is awarded to the female student graduating with the highest overall average from one of North Bay's five secondary schools who will be attending Nipissing University who also demonstrates financial need and is a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.

    Awarded to full-time students, admitted prior to September 2022, entering second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program at Nipissing, with a maximum of three years eligibility. Students will receive a $500 scholarship if they attain a minimum average of 80%, $750 if they attain a minimum average of 85% or $1000 if they attain a minimum average of 90% on their top 24 credits over the previous Fall/Winter session at Nipissing. Refer to the "weighted average" link on our website for further eligibility requirements. Students in the Concurrent Education program can only hold the scholarship in their "non-Professional" study years. Students in the BSCN.SPP and Consecutive Education programs do not qualify for this scholarship. This scholarship will not exceed the value of a student's Fall/Winter tuition fees. Students may not simultaneously hold any of the following: Chancellor's Award, NU Guaranteed Entrance Scholarship, NU First Robotics Scholarship, President's Scholarship, Upper Year Carl Sanders Award or Schulich Scholarship.

Preference is given to students from northern Ontario and to students who were and continue to be involved in university athletics.     Presented to a graduating student, either part-time or full-time, in each major. The recipients are chosen by the respective faculty of each major, primarily on the basis of academic achievement. Each student must have a minimum 80% average in the course used to calculate the average in his/her major. The majority of credits (24 for three-year degree students and 48 for four-year degree students) must have been earned at Nipissing University. Students with a double major are only eligible to receive one J.W. Trusler Award.

    Established in 1994 by John R. McCarthy, former Deputy Minister of University Affairs and Deputy Minister of Education for the Province of Ontario. The scholarship is awarded to a student who graduated with at least second-class standing from either a three-year or four-year undergraduate program at Nipissing University in the preceding academic year, and who is currently enrolled in the Schulich School of Education at Nipissing in the Fall Session immediately following graduation. Preference is given to a student who has displayed leadership in student government and student affairs, made a personal contribution to the life of the University, shown a fondness and aptitude for sports, and displayed leadership and a sense of fair play in athletic endeavours.

To be considered, applicants must demonstrate financial need, must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada and must have lived in Ontario for at least one year.

    Presented annually to a full-time upper year student whose integrity, scholarship and extra-curricular contribution to the Nipissing University athletic community is outstanding. This award aims to recognize a student who strives to encourage the "Laker Spirit" in one or more of the following areas of university athletics: varsity and intramural sports, the Nipissing University Student Athletic Council, coaching and/or official game duties.

    Established to honour the life of Kenneth Donaldson. Ken was a loving step father to Nipissing Alumni, Lea Cruickshank, who graduated from the Bachelor of Education program in 2021. This award recognizes Ken’s passion for sports and his love of hockey. The award is presented to a full-time male or female student in the Bachelor of Education program.
