NU Reads launches Read-A-Thon

NU Reads is kicking off its fourth year of inspiring a love of literacy in young people with the first annual NU Reads-A-Thon.

NU Reads volunteers will be reading children’s books on Saturday, December 17, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. at Nipissing’s downtown campus (100 Main Street East). Parents and guardians are invited to bring their children to enjoy the stories. The cost is a donation in support of the Gathering Place’s Garden project, planned to begin operation this spring. We’re excited to connect with the Gathering Place this year,” said Nipissing student Alayna Becker, one of the NU Reads founders. “NU Reads was started to make a difference in the community. The Read-A-Thon is a good way for us to give back and thank North Bay. The aim of NU Reads is to sow the seeds of literacy, and we hope that the NU Reads-A-Thon will help sow the seeds of nutrition for many residents of North Bay.”

NU Reads was created by two Nipissing University students with of an interest in youth literacy and a desire to help instill a life-long love of learning and literacy. During sessions, Nipissing University students work with young children to enhance literacy skills. Each session is built around a theme, from Pirates to Rhyming and Recipes. Participants complete activities using reading skills introduced around the different themes. Students also practice their reading with appropriate books.

The first session for NU Reads takes place on January 14, 2012 at Nipissing’s downtown campus. There are separate sessions for different age groups: for children aged 4 – 7, it runs from 10 – 11 a.m.; and for children aged 8 – 12, it runs from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
