Alumnus Deputy Chief Williams to be invested into Order of Merit
Congratulations to Nipissing Alumnus and former member of the Board of Governors, Deputy Chief Alan Williams, who will be invested into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces as a Member of the Order of Merit (M.O.M.).The North Bay Police Service announced Williams’ honour in a press release last week.
Williams graduated Nipissing University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He served on Nipissing’s Board of Governors for two terms, from 2002 – 2008.
Recipients of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces are first nominated and then selected by a panel made up of members of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Governor General’s office. After receiving nominations from this panel, the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the principal commander of the order, submits recommendations for appointment to the Governor General for final approval.
The Order of Merit of the Police Forces was created in 2000, to recognize conspicuous merit and exceptional service by sworn members and civilian employees of the Canadian police forces whose contributions extend beyond protection of the community.
Deputy Chief Williams has enjoyed an outstanding policing career starting as a cadet with the Metropolitan Toronto Police in 1974 before joining the North Bay Police Service in 1979. He successfully worked his way through the ranks, holding a variety of positions within various sections of the Police Service, before being promoted to Deputy Chief of Police in April of 2004.
