Dr. Tabachnick talks Concepts of Nature in a Technological Society

Nipissing’s Masters of Environmental Science/Studies program presents Concepts of Nature in a Technological Society, a presentation by Dr. David Tabachnick, associate professor and Chair of Nipissing’s Political Science department.

The lecture takes place on Thursday, October 25, at 7 p.m. in the Nipissing Theatre, room F213.

Dr. Tabachnick’s talk is a philosophical and historical exploration of changing conceptions of nature. In part, this exploration focuses on the way in which our idea of nature governs how we relate to and, eventually, attempt to control and direct the natural world. This “history of ideas” approach will employ a survey of various conceptions of nature found in ancient, medieval and modern texts. The broader goal is to highlight how we came to conceive of nature as “the environment” and as a “resource” along with how this conception is intertwined with the continuing development of our technological society.
