Lakers Coach Wins Award
Lakers coach named OCAA West coach of the year
North Bay, ON, February 23, 2012 — On the cusp of battling for a provincial championship this weekend, Nipissing University’s men’s volleyball team already has reason to celebrate as the team garnered some prestigious awards this morning.
The Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) announced the men’s volleyball awards today in a ceremony to launch the Men’s Volleyball Championships, taking place at Nipissing University February 23 – 25.
Nipissing Lakers head coach Eric Yung was named the OCAA West coach of the year and is nominated for the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association coach of the year. The second-year head coach inspired his team to a five-game improvement on its regular season record from a season ago. Yung, a graduate of Nipissing who was an accomplished student athlete, has a trio of players recognized as OCAA West first-team all-stars, including Taylor Bielby (Barrie, Ont.), Scott Coulthard (Wingham, Ont.) and Frankie Edgecombe (Elmvale, Ont.).
The OCAA Championships start at 1 p.m. today with the Mohawk Mountaineers (3rd in the West) facing the Seneca Sting (2nd in the East) in a rematch of last year’s bronze medal game.
The Lakers (2nd in the West) will take on the Durham Lords (3rd in the East) at 6 p.m.
All games are played in the newly expanded Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.
