Lakers soccer action recap
Last weekend saw the Lakers soccer teams get their kicks in against the Trent Excalibur. The men’s team earned a big win while the women’s team struggled to score, damaging their playoff hopes.Men’s actionLakers leap past ExcaliburThe Nipissing Lakers men’s soccer team improved to 3-3-3 on the season with a crucial 3-1 road victory over the Trent Excalibur on Sunday.
With the win, the Lakers sit in a three-way tie with Laurentian and Toronto for fourth place in the OUA East standings with 12 points each. Toronto does, however, have one game in hand.
The Lakers’ Tylor Doell opened the scoring at the 33rd minute while teammate Jordi Ortepi scored his first OUA goal ten minutes later to put the visiting Lakers up 2-0 at the half. Scott Hoogkamp scored the third goal of the game before Trent would add their first and only marker of the game.
That’s as close as Trent would get as the Lakers walked away with an important road victory.
The Lakers will be back on the pitch Thanksgiving weekend as they face the always tough Carleton Ravens Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at the Education Centre Field.Women’s actionLady Lakers drop key contest
The Nipissing Lady Lakers quest for a playoff berth took a hit Sunday as their scoring drought continued and the Trent Excalibur walked away with a 2-0 victory. This wasn’t by any means the final dagger but the comeback for a playoff bid becomes a daunting task.
The Lady Lakers will need to win four of their remaining six games should they hope to remain in the playoff hunt. This will not be an easy task as the Lady Lakers will face Ryerson, Toronto and RMC who are all within reach.
In the match against Trent, the Lady Lakers surrendered an early goal by Brittany Forrester who scored in the opening five minutes. Given the lack of scoring by the Lakers this is certainly something the team will need to correct over the next few weeks.
Trent’s Shannon O’Brien put in the final goal of the game as she found the mesh at the 44th minute.
The Lady Lakers did play a solid game but can’t seem to find the finishing touch. The loss drops the Lady Lakers to 0-8-2 while Trent improves to 2-7-1.
The Lady Lakers will be back at home Thanksgiving weekend as they face Carleton Saturday and Ottawa Sunday. Both games begin at noon at the Education Centre Field.?
