The ski season came to an end at the Canadian National Ski Championships in Quebec City this past week, with six days of racing over nine days of competition.Acting in collaboration with the North Bay Nordic Racing Team, the Northern Ontario Division, and the Ontario Ski Team, Nipissing put forward one varsity racer and five juniors at this culminating event for cross country ski racing in the country. Nipissing racers went to the line against Canadian National Team skiers, fresh off the plane from Europe where they have put in a watershed year with a string of World Cup medals, proving our nation to be a powerhouse in the sport. The field at the event was deep, with racers from the Norwegian Junior National Team, the French National Team, and some of the top NCAA collegiate teams from the United States. Temperatures soared above 20 degrees, with soft tracks and continually changing conditions making the work of the wax technicians and skiers both especially challenging.
Second-year Nipissing Nordic skier Lynsey Bialkowski put in respectable performances against sturdy competition, managing a 92nd place finish in the 5km classic event, 93rd in the 10km skate race, 89th in the sprint qualifier, and a 54th place result in the 30km classic event. Ranked against the country’s varsity racers in the CCUNC results, Lynsey’s best result was a 26th in the skate sprint qualifier, posting a time of 4:16.95 over the 1.4km course.
