Tough losses for Lakers hockey in la Belle Province
As they say, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. So, while the Nipissing Lakers were close to victories in weekend matches against the Concordia Stingers and McGill Redmen, it was little consolation. On Friday night, against Concordia, the Lakers found themselves three seconds from overtime when a breakaway goal sealed their fate with a 6-5 loss. Adding some extra bitterness, was the fact that the Lakers had battled back from an early deficit thanks to goals from Andrew Marcoux, Kevin Rebelo and Matt Paton. Brandon Biggers and Vern Cooper also added goals for the Lakers.
The team had little time to stew about the last second loss, taking to the ice to face the powerful McGill squad the very next night.
Against McGill, the Lakers staked a 3-1 third period lead, only to see it go up in smoke as McGill poured in three unanswered goals to notch a 4-3 victory.
Lakers scoring came from the sticks of Grant Toulmin, Kevin Rebelo and Cooper.
With the losses, the Lakers post a 7-8 record and sit in sixth place in the crowded OUA East division, just four points shy of the third-place Ottawa Gee Gees, who visit North Bay this Saturday night.
