Students win in Paul Nelson Memorial hockey games
Nipissing has built a reputation on providing a terrific student experience, and that held true in the second annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey game, as students were the big winners.More than $1,300 was raised for the Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship and Kidsport North Bay. In addition, over 185 non-perishable food items were donated to the Nipissing University Food Bank from the game and the Jersey 4 Food event.
On the ice, the third year Bachelor of Physical Health and Education (BPHE) students were victorious over the Alumni. In the second game, the fourth-year BPHE students used their considerable youth, physical fitness and hockey skills to narrowly defeat the wiser and deeply talented faculty and staff team by a score of 8-2 (yes, one touchdown equals narrowly).
Paul Nelson was a hard working and well respected student in Nipissing’s BPHE program, who volunteered with his local fire department. He died in 2012 in a tragic accident while responding to a fire call.
To honour his memory, Nelson’s friends and Nipissing BPHE faculty created a scholarship in his name and are raising funds through these hockey games.
