Dr. Tabachnick wins award

Congratulations to Dr. David Tabachnick, professor of political science, on earning a Harrison McCain Visiting Professorship Award, which will see him visiting and collaborating with faculty and students at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Dr. Tabachnick won the award on the basis of his project proposal, Multiculturalism in Canada and the United States after September 11th, 2001.  The project is designed as a comparative and theoretical analysis of Canadian and American responses to the growing tension between multiculturalism and concerns for national security in the post-9/11 period. Dr. Tabachnick’s three main goals are: i) to show how the distinct Canadian and American experiences of multiculturalism can help explain the unique domestic responses in each country to the terrorist attacks; ii) to illustrate how this distinction also sheds light on the character of the criticism of those responses; and iii) to explain why these different perspectives on multiculturalism hinder bilateral cooperation. This will also provide an opportunity to better understand the “multiculturalism crisis” as it is intensifies in many countries, inform policymakers and political leaders on how to find the proper balance between national security and cultural diversity and improve Canada-U.S. relations.

As part of the award, Dr. Tabcnick earned $11,000 to enable him to visit Acadia this September for a few months.  While there, he’ll also be running a workshop and conducting his own research.
