Lakers impress at OUA Nordic championships
With the weather cold enough to freeze a cowbell, the 2015 OUA Nordic Skiing Championships kicked off on Friday night in North Bay. While the weather could have been warmer, the action was certainly hot, and the Lakers perfectly mixed being gracious hosts with being tough competitors.
On Friday Night, the Lakers captured two bronze medals in the 2 x 0.6 km Free Relay, thanks to the women’s team of Shelby Dickey and Kajsa Heyes, and the men’s team of Thomsen D’Hont and Jordan Cascagnette.
Saturday saw the races move to the campus trails, and the Lakers just missed the podium, with Cascagnette and Heyes both finishing in fourth place.
As a result of extreme cold weather conditions in North Bay on Sunday, Day 3 races were cancelled.
When it was all said and done, Carleton men captured their first OUA Nordic banner since the 2011 while the Lakehead women's team won their 11th consecutive championship.
The Nipissing Lakers Nordic ski team finished third on both the men's and women's side and earned four all-star nods. Special congratulations to Lakers head coach Toivo Koivukoski, who was named coach of the year as voted by his fellow coaches for the second consecutive year.
