NU raises whiskers and money for Movember

Students, staff and faculty at Nipissing University have been celebrating Movember by getting hairy and raising money to help men’s health. The total amount raised was $3,692.85. All proceeds will go to the Movember Foundation Canada.

NUSU Cares, in conjunction with the Nipissing University Geography Club, have been hosting events and activities throughout the month of November.

“Our Movember campaign has promoted three things: Mental health awareness, physical health, and education about prostate and testicular cancer,” said Kiera Vere, Geography Club president. “We want men to take action by getting check ups with their doctor and knowing what to look for.”

Winners:

  • Overall department: Geography Club raised $2,016.01
  • Overall team: Student Learning and Transitions raised $520
  • Overall person: Dr. Eric Mattson, assistant professor of Geography raised $500

“We have also had amazing support from local businesses and our campus community,” said student Jasmin Beal, NUSU director-at-large and NUSU Cares committee member. “I am so proud to be on a campus that promotes mental health, open conversation and philanthropy. It’s a great feeling to be able to make a difference.”

Events included a Shave The Date event with Sportscut, Grow It Out Pub with the Fraser Tavern, Weighing In On Men’s Health with Goodlife Fitness, and Shave It Off Pub with the Moose Cookhouse.
