Paul Nelson memorial game - faculty-staff vs students for a great cause
Nipissing University is proud to host the fourth annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Game, this Friday, January 29, from 2 – 4 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.
This year features a doubleheader of hockey brilliance. The first game, at 2 p.m., pits first-year and second-year Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE) students versus third-year BPHE students. The second game sees the archetypal battle of youth and exuberance taking on age and wisdom, at 3 p.m. with fourth-year BPHE students facing off against Nipissing University faculty and staff.
In these games, however, everyone wins; proceeds raised support the Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship and the Nipissing University Food Bank.
The intermission between the two games features a Chuck-a-Puck event with some serious prizes, including a Team Canada Patrick Sharp jersey, so come on down to Memorial Gardens and cheer on the Faculty and Staff team (please…really, we need any help you can offer). Admission to attend the game is a donation to the food bank, or a monetary donation. Students, staff and faculty suiting up to play in the game, pay a small fee to raise money in support of the scholarship.
The Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a third-year student in Nipissing’s Coaching course who exemplifies excellence in the development of their coaching philosophy.
Paul Nelson was a hard working and well-respected student in Nipissing’s BPHE program, who volunteered with his local fire department. He died in 2012 in a tragic accident while responding to a fire call.
To honour his memory, Nelson’s friends and Nipissing BPHE faculty created a scholarship in his name and are raising funds through these hockey games. Colin Snider, a BPHE student, created this short video to raise awareness and promote the game.
Following an exhaustive series of tryouts, Nipissing is proud to unveil the faculty/staff roster:
