Pie Your Prof for a great cause
A group of residence students are taking charge to help the two Syrian refugee families moving to North Bay, and their plan involves pie, profs and school supplies.
The group of Townhouse Residence Complex students are holding Pie Your Prof auctions over the next few weeks to raise funds to purchase school supplies for the children of refugee families. So far, two professors are already slated for pieing, Andrew Ackerman and Dr. Nathan Colborne; however, the group is happy to accommodate any professors brave enough to step forward and donate their face to a worthy cause (hint hint).
Once a professor agrees, the group will visit their class, bringing protective clothing and cleanup tools as well as a single delicious pie. After a short speech about the goals of the fundraising initiative, the pie is auctioned off and the highest bidder gets to go to town, Marx Brothers classic comedy style, and pie that prof.
“When we first decided as a group to do something to help the refugee families we got in touch with the North Bay multicultural society. They suggested that we do a backpack initiative, where we fill backpacks with school supplies. The first refugee family consists of a single mom with nine children, ages 2-16, so school supplies are a necessity for them,” said Ashleigh Lockhart, who helped spearhead the imitative. “As students, we want to help and we thought Pie Your Prof would be a fun way to rally support.”
“This fundraising initiative emerged through NU Residence’s Leaders Emerging through Active Development Living Learning Community. It’s wonderful to see our residence students taking the initiative to make the world a better place and to help people in our community,” said Genevieve de Bruyn, supervisor, Residence Student Education.
