NU signs new partnership for Alternative Dispute Resolution
Building on the success of course and certificate offerings in peace studies and violence prevention within Nipissing University’sPolitical Science program, and in response to a need from the community for education in conflict resolution, Nipissing is pleased to announce a partnership with the Canadian International Institute of Applied Negotiation (CIIAN). Drawing on the practical expertise of CIIAN in negotiating resolutions to conflicts in Canada and overseas over the last 25 years and in teaching others to do the same, these courses will offer professional accreditation in alternative dispute resolution for Nipissing students and for those from the community at large. “Though conflicts can be opportunities to make progress, they can also entrench inherited misunderstandings. How we can recognize our differences while collaborating to create common ground are urgent needs in an increasingly interconnected world,” said Dr. Toivo Koivukoski, associate professor of Political Science at Nipissing. “Over the last five years Nipissing faculty have enjoyed a deepening relationship with our partners at CIIAN, by engaging in teaching and service together. Having their experience in conflict resolution involved in our not-for-credit offerings is a boon to both the university and to the community we serve.” “We’re very excited about this important, new partnership with Nipissing University, said Dr. Evan Hoffman, CIIAN Senior Associate. “This strategic partnership builds upon the strengths of both institutions and their mutual commitment to socially-responsive, flexible, and innovative educational programs for adult learners.” The memorandum of understanding signed by Nipissing and CIIAN is directed towards the offering of professionally-accredited studies in alternative dispute resolution, to be launched in the academic year to come. In the lead-up to the launch of the new certificate program, customized training and conflict resolution services are on offer to community members in North Bay and the surrounding region through Nipissing University.
