Nursing student earns award

Congratulations to Nursing student Lauren Easton on earning the 2017 Jennifer Award from the Registered Nurses’ Foundation of Ontario (RNFOO).The Jennifer Award recognizes excellence and supports baccalaureate nursing students completing their degree. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding potential and contribution to various fields of nursing.
Easton is a second-year student in the School of Nursing’s Scholar Practitioner Program in Toronto. Interested in community health and primary care, Easton is also an advocate of trauma-informed care and harm reduction. She has attended a variety of independently pursued workshops and conferences to enhance her nursing practice, including topics related to developmental trauma, global health, refugee health, human trafficking, inner-city health, overdose awareness, supporting survivors of sexual assault and providing care to sex workers.
Easton actively prepares herself to be a nursing leader. As the recipient of the ONA 2015 Scholarship, her essay was published in the ONA Frontlines May 2016 Newsletter, where she highlighted the importance of unions for the advocacy and protection of RNs in Ontario. To enrich her research skills, Easton worked as a research assistant reporting to Dr. Ping Zou. Further, she acted as a student representative to present on her experiences in the Scholar Practitioner Program at the Board of Governors meeting at Nipissing University in January 2017. In February 2017, Easton was awarded the Dave Marshall Leadership Award – Academic Category for Nipissing University.
