Old Lakers kinda impressive in Guelph
While your Lakers varsity athletes were busy with playoff action, another group of athletes from Nipissing was donning blue and green (and a few other colours) and hitting the ice to face off against stiff competition from other Ontario universities in the annual University Faculty sand Staff Hockey Tournament.
Held at Guelph University, the tournament welcomed teams from Guelph, Waterloo, Laurier, Western, McMaster and Nipissing.
While Waterloo took home bragging rights as tournament champions, the Nipissing team was pretty fine, playing with impressive heart if slightly less impressive skill.
With only nine players making the trip, the team was tested early on when Verdon “Flying V” Vaillancourt was forced out of the first game due to an undisclosed full-body injury. The team rallied around Flying V as their spiritual leader, beating Waterloo and Western on the first day before falling to their hosts from Guelph.
Flying V returned on day two, as Bob “Lead” Pipe was absent from the lineup due to a “had to return to work for COU meetings in Toronto” injury. By all accounts the team played valiantly, narrowly losing to Laurier before besting Western.
Their 3-2 record proved good enough for third-place in the final tournament standings.
“We’ll get ‘em next year,” stated player-coach Mark “Boom Boom” Bruner, while gasping for breath and dipping his entire body in a vat of Rub-A5-35. “Team conditioning was excellent, but that’s a lot of hockey for only a few guys. We are all looking forward to a full roster next year.”
Tryouts begin immediately. Check out the roster below. Have you got what it takes to join this motley crew of super athletes?
