History seminar series discussing African-Canadians’ military contributions

Nipissing University welcomes Dr. Amadou Ba for a special presentation on March 2 at 2:30 p.m. in room A122, titled The Military Contribution of Blacks in Canada: African-Canadians and War from 1812 to 1945.

This lecture is part of the History department’s ongoing seminar series.

Dr. Ba, a lecturer at Laurentian University, will speak about a little known part of Canada’s history: the contribution of Blacks to the country’s military history. He focusses on the participation of African-Canadians in Canada’s wars from 1812 to 1945. Historians debate the effects of war on Canada yet few scholars have given any attention to the contributions made by African-Canadians Canada despite the fact that they have been involved in and made significant contributions to all of Canada’s wars at home and abroad. This talk explores African-Canadian participation in Canada’s military conflicts from the War of 1812 to WWII and discusses what this participation meant for the evolving place of African-Canadians within Canadian society.
