Nipissing University’s Inaugural Research Month Comes to a Close
Nipissing’s Inaugural Research Month came to an exciting close as its final event, NU360, drew members of the university and local community to downtown North Bay. The goal of Research Month 2019 was to showcase the exciting work in research conducted at Nipissing University, and to highlight its impact for communities. Events throughout the month included the launch of the Strategic Research Plan, the graduate student 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, the Undergraduate Research Conference, a number of workshops, the Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition, and the NU360 event, held at The Grande Event Centre.
“It is important for us to share with the public the work Nipissing researchers are accomplishing, much of our work is government funded and makes significant contributions to the climate of today and communities we live in,” said Dr. Jim McAuliffe, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. “Additionally, the research culture is growing here at Nipissing University and we are excited to share the good news.”
Dr. David Zarifa, a Canada Research Chair, Nipissing University Professor, a presenter at the NU360 event and speaker during the launch of the Strategic Research Plan spoke highly of the month noting that “Research Month provided several great opportunities for students and faculty members to showcase their work. There is a great deal of cutting-edge research happening here at Nipissing University, and the 3MT and NU360 events in particular gave members of the wider North Bay community, whether public, not-for-profits, or private sector stakeholders, a chance to discover and connect with the research and innovation happening right in their own backyard.”
The final event of the month, NU360, highlighted the value of Research Month tremendously. Ten faculty members from a variety of disciplines presented their current areas of research to the North Bay community, under the challenging constraint of presenting in 6 minutes with 6 slides. Presenters included, Dr. H. Earl, Dr. D. Zarifa, A. Burk, Dr. S. Arnocky, Q. Zhu, Dr. H. Hosseini, Dr. C. Mady, Dr. A. Erfani, Dr. A. Schinkel-Ivy and Dr. T. Smith. Dr. Justin Carré, Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies and Research and the host of NU360 said, “It was exciting to see our faculty present their work. Six minutes is certainly a challenge to consolidate hours, months and even years of research but it is important to be able to share the work with North Bay and those it may affect. We look forward to hosting the event each year and watching it grow.”
The Office of Graduate Studies and Research would like to thank all who attended and supported the events of Research Month and look forward to next year.
