Executive in Residence shares insights with business students

At the end of winter term, Dr. George Flumerfelt, Nipissing University’s School of Business Executive in Residence and President and Chief Executive Officer of The Redpath Group, delivered virtual guest lectures to students in two introductory accounting classes taught by accounting lecturer, Alisha Millar.

Dr. Flumerfelt’s first lecture discussed Redpath Mining Limited, the nature of their operations, growth over time, jurisdictions of operation and what has led to the success of the corporation over time. The presentation elaborated on capital assets, mining equipment purchases and other considerations that impact capital purchasing decisions. This lecture provided insights to the students on how organizations treat property, plant and equipment, and the acquisition and treatment of these assets in their books of accounts.

The second lecture introduced students to Redpath as a corporation, discussed the industry, competition, leadership, area of expertise and how all support functions interact with the business unit. This lecture was coincided with Miller’s class discussion on the treatment of accounting transactions for corporations compared to sole proprietorship and partnership organizations.

“Having an Executive in Residence gives our students the ability to hear from the CEO of a large multinational corporation right here in North Bay,” said Dr. Prasad Ravi, director, School of Business. “This gives us the opportunity to connect classroom concepts with real-life situations.”
