NU Brantford students hosting STEM field trip
Nipissing University’s Brantford campus will host a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Innovation Field Trip for 40 Grade 3, 4 and 5 students from Hagersville Elementary School on February 22.
The field trip will explore Canadian innovation in communications. It is organized by two fourth-year Nipissing students, Joseph Bishop and Presley Sibbick, with the assistance of Nipissing professor Dr. Maria Cantalini-Williams. The trip is an extension of the STEM Club started by Bishop and Sibbick at Hagersville Elementary School this year, when the pair was completing the practical component of their Bachelor of Education degree.
As part of the field trip, students will be creating a new communication innovations of their own.
“This is going to be a fun and engaging day for the Hagersville students and we are excited to welcome them to Nipissing,” said Bishop. “We started the STEM Club because we wanted to offer the students a unique opportunity to try something new. There are lots of opportunities for sports clubs but not many for science and technology. We chose to focus on Canadian communication innovation for the field trip because Brantford is the home of Alexander Graham Bell and we thought it would be a great way to celebrate the 150th Birthday of Canada.”
The STEM Innovation Celebration takes place between 9:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on February 22, at the Nipissing Brantford Campus, 50 Wellington Street. ?
