Nursing profs earn $100,000 grant
Nursing professors from Nipissing University are part of a research team that has earned a $100,000 grant from eCampus Ontario to investigate the cost effectiveness of using computer simulation in Nursing Education.
Nipissing’s faculty members, Laurie Peachey and Dr. Tammie McParland are working with the grant lead, Dr. Jane Tyerman, from the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing, as well as researchers from Queen’s University and the University of Ottawa.
The successful grant follows a call from eCampus Ontario last summer for education professionals to submit proposals that would encourage cross-institution collaboration while focusing on areas of high labour market demand.
The title of the project is The Cost Utility of Using Virtual Pre-simulation Preparation in Nursing Education.
The grant and the research collaboration between the Schools of Nursing involved continues to build upon the partnerships and research opportunities that were created from a 2014 COUPN PIF grant, which saw more than $5,000,000 awarded to 13 universities and four college partners to create simulation scenarios to support fourth-year nursing students transition to practice. Because of the PIF funding, the School of Nursing at Nipissing University and its collaborative partner, Canadore College, received more than $750,000 dollars to create and resource a simulation laboratory for the BScN program.
“Earning this grant and being a part of this research team is a testament to the expertise that exists in the School of Nursing at Nipissing University,” said Dr. Harley d’Entremont, provost and vice-president academic and research at Nipissing. “This important research further develops knowledge around the use of simulation in nursing education, a subject in which both Ms. Peachey and Dr. McParland have extensive research and hands-on experience.”
