NUScience Explorations connects with national network
Nipissing University is pleased to announce that the Schulich School of Education’s NUScience Explorations camp is now a member of Actua, providing access to their resources, network and supports. Actua is a national charity that is preparing youth to be innovators and leaders by engaging them in exciting and accessible STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) experiences that build critical skills and confidence. They reach youth through two main mechanisms: a national network of 36 university and college-based members, and a national Outreach Team. "Nipissing University is honoured to join the Actua network,” said Dr. Carole Richardson, dean of the Schulich School of Education. “Our university is committed to engaging Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth of northern Ontario in STEM related programming.
With Actua's demonstrated leadership and its rich and diverse supports, networks and resources, we are excited to strengthen our STEM programming and explore new opportunities for the youth of Northern Ontario." “We are thrilled to welcome NUScience Explorations to the Actua network,” said Jennifer Flanagan, CEO of Actua. “They have demonstrated strong leadership in developing successful practices in STEM education for Indigenous youth and we look forward to working together to inspire more youth in North Bay and communities across Northern Ontario.” NUScience Explorations (formerly known as the Science, Mathematics and Engineering Camps) engage more than 100 youth ages 8-12 annually through summer programs on campus.
The program was originally developed to support Indigenous youth residing on campus during the summer months while their parents were enrolled in university courses. The program has since expanded to offer programming to all youth in the North Bay area. Planned expansion will focus on increasing access across the region through summer programs in several First Nations communities across Northern Ontario.
